World’s largest luxury watch manufacturer
World’s largest luxury watch manufacturer is making more than 3000 pieces per day. Rolex founded on 15th November 1905 by Hense Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London. In the year 1919, the company moved from London to Geneva, Switzerland and changed its name to ‘Rolex watch company’.
At the time people mostly used pocket watches and most of those watches were manufactured in Switzerland. Wilsdorf focused on wristwatches and invented a piece of internal machinery displaying accurate time with a small swiss company. He made the watch, named it Agler and sent it to the Swiss school of horology and London’s Kew Observatory for checking. They gave it the status of a chronometer, which means it was checked in three different types of atmosphere – In the fridge, at normal temperature, and in a normal oven. Thus Agler became the first wristwatch in the world to receive this certificate.
In 1926, Rolex created the first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch named ‘Oyster’. It is one thing to claim a watch is waterproof and another to prove it. Rolex used to keep oyster in water tanks to showcase it’s qualities to customers. At the time Mercedez Gleitze became the first woman to cross the English channel but there were some controversies regarding her campaign. She announced to do it once again to prove her metal. This time Wilsdorf offered her to gift a Rolex watch if she crosses the English channel wearing Rolex Oyster. She agreed to do this. The swim lasted for more 10 hours and the watch was in perfect working order at the end of it.
To celebrate the success of Mercedez and Oyster, Rolex published a full-page ad on the front page of the Daily Mail proclaiming the oyster watch is waterproof, dustproof and compatible with low temperature. Oyster became a sensation overnight. After the mammoth success of Oyster, Rolex did countless experiments and build its Dominance in the luxury wristwatch section. In 2008, Rolex Subsidiary established in India. Today, Rolex is one of the top wristwatch brands in the world. Rolex sells luxury watches ranging from 2 lacs to more than one crore in India.
